in preparation
This page covers birds of the Indian subcontinent south of the Himalaya mountains. Aim is to provide an overview of the rich avifauna in this region. Only three areas have been visited, Bardia NP in the low lying Terai region of Nepal, Ranthambore NP in Rajasthan/India (also see the respective general wildlife page) and Keoladeo NP in Rajasthan. Whereas Bardia and Ranthambore are well known big game areas, Keoladeo is almost exclusively a bird sanctuary. This former Maharadja hunting ground is partly wetland with shallow lakes and partly dry bushland. The shallow lakes are incredibly rich in aquatic life and have been described as a soup of waterplants, fish, frogs and insects. Large numbers of waterbirds are attracted and many northerly species spend the winter here.
